About Aiden...birth day

Aiden Morgan Jones was born @ 10:10 a.m. November 18, 2009. His due date was January, 10, 2010.

At approx. 32/33 weeks of development, Aiden was born by emergency C-section after discovery of a rare condition called Fetal Hydrops. Fetal Hydrops is an abnormal accumulation of fluid in 2 or more compartments. In Aiden's case, approx. 1cm of fluid covered his skull , a large fluid mass was in his abdomen, and the largest amount of fluid filled his chest cavity affecting his heart and lungs. An impromtu ultrasound to check his mother for kidney stones revealed a severe case that commanded immediate attention and swift action.

The doctor reviewed ultrasound dictation and consulted with specialists. Within 2 hours of the ultrasound, Aiden's parents were notified and told to return to Celebration Hospital quickly, time was short and the risk was great. Time: 6:15 p.m.

That urgent trip to the hospital was the beginning of a life event that none of us could have anticipated. A ride that has tested the faith, confidence, strength, and wisdom of many.Time: 7 p.m.

An ambulance ride to Florida Hospital South in Orlando, a long night of contractions, batteries of tests, and little sleep made it clear our lives had already changed.

The pediatric specialists arrived to qualify the situation and review current data. Time: 8 a.m.

Another ultrasound was done because the monitoring information didn't agree with the ultrasound results. How could Baby Aiden have all external monitors showing normal reads, yet have so much excess fluid in his little body?

The pediatric specialist performed the ultrasound himself. He seemed surprised that Baby Aiden could be reading normally in such a distressed situation. His conclusion: An urgent delivery would be necessary if Baby Aiden was to have the best chance of survival. Time 9:00 a.m.

The specialist's words, "It's time to deliver and start prayer."

Aiden Morgan jones delivered at 10:10 a.m. and was handed to a level 3 NICU team. Aiden's mother reamined strong, managed a smile, and was moved to recovery.

3 hrs passed before any information would be shared. The neonatologist came to recovery to present the findings to Baby Aiden's family.

The findings: A team of specialists, ARPN's, senior resident doctors, and others filled the room to work on Aiden. Aiden's 1 minute APGAR was a 2. His 5 minute APGAR was a 4. Average is 7 from what we've been told.

Aiden would weigh 5lbs 8oz with 1.5 - 2lbs being excess fluid in his tiny body. He was immediately placed on a respirator; 2 chest tubes inserted to drain fluid surrounding his heart and lungs; another drain tube for his abdomen. Feeding tubes and wires through his belly button, temperature sensors, heart monitors, and blood pressure monitors in place as well.

Baby Aiden looked like a giant blister with fluid throughout his body. His skin was puffy and thin.
My baby boy was presented with his first life challenge: a fight for his life.
