12/28/09 - PM Update - Venting

Mom will stay with Aiden one more night at Winter Park hospital. Possible discharge Tuesday morning.

Aiden has decided to eat much better than he was. Still a few feeds under 40ml's (minimum amount decided by the admitting doctor?) but eating much more like he should be at this time. Looked great this afternoon and the most active and alert we've seen him to date. He obviously wants to go home.

Our family will not go back to Winter Park hospital. We'll drive to Gainesville first. Nurses and docs are nice but seem uncomfortable and/or unprepared for Aiden's case. Nurse tonight is the only one who's expressed any interest in what's going on, or not going on. Mom said her 1st 5 minutes was better than all other nurses combined. Mom likes tonight's nurse.

Until tonight, nobody has responded to check on bradycardias, cared to ask so they could chart them, or even been proactive in checking on Mom and Aiden. Some have sporadically asked if anything was needed and the admitting nurse was accommodating but overall there has been a lack of competence and consideration displayed. Doc even tried to put a line in the under side of Aiden's wrist but the vein kept rolling. Good vein on top of his wrist wasn't attempted. Mom had to tell the doc to stop and leave Aiden alone after a few attempts. Even getting fax numbers and other basic information seems to be a bother for today's day nurse. Seems like a lazy, unprepared staff that is used to coasting. Not all of them, but very disappointing stay. I'll leave it at that. We won't be back!

Mom takes Aiden to his regular pediatrician tomorrow for his 1st visit and will inquire further. Dad told Mom to insist on discharge tonight and go to Florida Hospital South where Aiden was in NICU. The staff there is awesome, prepared, on top of their game, and pay attention to every one's needs, patient or not. We miss having Lisa and other docs/nurses looking after Aiden. Lisa was responsive, communicated well, and along with ALL the other staff made sure Aiden was well cared for. Thanks Lisa and Florida Hospital South staff! ALL of you rock!!!

As of now, the only obvious benefit of Aiden being in Winter Park hospital is the labs. Otherwise, better off at home. Labs came back normal. Anemia was a consideration but labs dismiss that theory. So for now, the only explanation we have is there isn't one. No rhyme or reason for Aiden's appetite and fatigue. We could be doctors or nurses at Winter Park hospital, too...we can scratch our heads and sit on our --ses with the best of em'! Actually, no we couldn't.

Will update the blog more in the coming days as things develop. Hopefully Aiden saw that he needed to improve to come home. Only took him 2 hrs to realize he didn't want to be at Winter Park hospital either! That's when he started eating full bottles.

We hope this is an isolated behavior pattern for Aiden. Hopefully he will come home tomorrow and do what he needs to do so he can thrive. It's been challenging to say the least. Mom has been terrific and continues to find the energy to do what's needed to be done. She's done a terrific job.

As always, the support of family and friends is appreciated. Nothing short of amazing. Truly the best there is. We can't thank you enough. We love you all.

  1. Glad to hear Aiden is doing better but sorry to hear of your troubles at the hospital. When Lilah had to go back to the hospital after discharge we went Arnold Palmer since Winnie is where the girls had been in the NICU originally...we liked it at Arnold...a little more than Winnie since we could room in with her there during her 3 day stay. Hopefully you wont have to take Aiden back to any hospitals so "next time" won't matter! Maybe Aiden was going through a growth spurt...some say babies tend to sleep more during those times and make up for it later by doing some vigorous eating. Good luck with discharge #2! Can't wait for you all to be home again!

  2. It's Lisa at FH South....Thank you so much for the compliments. I try to do the best we can for my babies and treat them as if they were my own. I know if it was my child how I would want to be treated. Having spent 5 days in an ICU myself, I know what it's like to be scared in the hospital. I am so sorry your experience was so bad. Our peds department here at south would have provided you with the same care as our NICU, so if you need us in the furture, come back here :). I hope things continue to get better and I will continue to keep you all in my prayers.
