12/24/09 - Wouldn't you know it?

Funny thing happened yesterday. On the way home from work Dad got 2 phone calls, one to schedule CPR training and the other to schedule heart monitor training. Whatever we couldn't do today (Thursday) would have to wait until next week.

We arrived with some family and friends for CPR training at noon. CPR training finished about 2:15, just in time for the heart monitor training (scheduled @ 2pm). The alarm person was late. 3pm and still a "no show." Finally showed a little after 4pm and was done in about 20 minutes.

While we waited on for the alarm training, a nurse asked if we were staying the night tonight so Aiden could go home tomorrow. WHAT? Uh, yeah, you kidding us? She wasn't kidding.

After being told that several nurses had already checked on room availability for the overnight stay (for other parents) we didn't expect to stay tonight. Wouldn't you know it, tonight was available. We made last minute arrangements and thanks to some dear friends, we were able to spend tonight in the NICU with Aiden.

So here we are in the NICU. Our 1st night with Aiden. Missing our other kids but we know they understand and are in good hands. This holiday season has been exhausting and a Christmas like no other. Our family is not together tonight but we are all sacrificing and doing what needs to be done. Family and friends - we couldn't do this without you!!!!

We get to take Aiden home tomorrow, Christmas day. Discharge could take several hrs and we have some prescriptions to fill.

Aiden will come home with caffeine supplements, vitamins, and a heart monitor. This thing is loud! Normal to have it for at least 3 months and possibly up to 9 months. Aiden has to demonstrate consecutive improvements before he will be taken off the monitor. Every bradycardia and apnia is recorded. Reviewed monthly.

Met a nice family from Toronto this afternoon. Been here since she was 28 wks along and delivered @34 wks on Saturday (6 wks early). Great news is that they get discharged tomorrow as well. Healthy baby girl named Emma. Please keep them in your prayers as they travel back to Toronto with their newborn.

That's all for now. Our baby boy is going home tomorrow!
